Park View Kayak Launch No Contact Advisory and Extended Closure
In 2020, the Park View Kayak launch was closed just 2 years after completion of the construction of the public Kayak Launch, costing the taxpayer over $700,000.
Between 2019 and 2020, over 1.6 million gallons of Raw Sewerage was dumped into the Park View Canal and Biscayne Bay. The Park View Sustainable Association jumped into action at the forefront of an extensive advocacy campaign to Restore Water Quality in the Park View Canal. Water holds no boundaries, so this is a Miami Beach issue, that affects all our waterways including Biscayne Bay.
The UM Study discovered that a 82 acre around in North Beach discharges polluted stormwater without any filtering into the Park View Canal.
The UM Study also discovered another bacteria hotspot polluting the Park View Canal, this time even more egregious than the original hotspot found at the Park View Kayak Launch.
This latest hotspot was found to have elevated bacteria levels over 3400 times the state mandated limit for safe recreation...and they found it at Biscayne Beach Elementary. The school where children spend most of their days. Omar has been sounding this emergency alarm since 2020, through special tv reports, newspaper articles and community advocacy through the Park View Island Sustainable Association.
Now we know it's not the birds, iguanas, or "irresponsible dog owners", as they tried to blame originally, it's much worse! It's the crumbling sewer and stormwater infrastructure that's been leaking for years.
This is a public health crisis, that has landed our City on the top list of most polluted beaches in the USA!
The City needs over $100 million dollars to replace all the crumbling infrastructure in North Beach, and guess who is left holding the bag with increased water and sewer rates? The residents...not the developers...not the special interests.
